OSince her four children were in elementary school, Meghan McDermott decided it was finally time to pursue her passion.

“My passion has always been homes and interior design,” she says. “I grew up in a family of home builders, so throughout my childhood I was always exposed to home building.”

Originally from Upper St. Clair, McDermott returned to Pittsburgh from Chicago in 2012 and designed her home in the South Hills. Inspired by a request from a friend, she launched Blue and Blanc Design in 2018.

“A very close friend of mine was building a new house, and she and her husband asked me, ‘Do you want to help us with our house?’ says McDermott. “They really wanted me to help them, and I thought it was a perfect opportunity to start my business.”

Although Blue and Blanc Design has grown its business since then, McDermott says the couple’s home, where she curated everything from lighting to artwork and furniture, will always be one of her most cherished projects. memorable.

“Their house is like my baby because it was like my first real project,” she says. “I used blue and white, but I loved how in their living room we used berry colors. There was special attention to the lighting and the art of the command creates a very unique and special element in someone’s space.

Along with having a signature blue and white on the homes she designs (hence the company name), McDermott says she loves the transitional style.

“I think it’s very important as a designer to challenge myself with other projects and clients that aren’t my usual style.” she says.

McDermott, whose design of the pool house won Best Space in this year’s Best of Design competitionadds that at the start of a new project, she takes care to work with the client to understand how they live in their home.

“It’s about helping a customer navigate what will really create the end product they’re going to love,” she says. “Just being in their home helps because you kind of see how they’re currently living.”

McDermott also enjoys customizing each client’s home with unique details.

“I love mixing patterns and using wallpaper. I love bespoke furniture and working with all the little details,” she says. “I tend to source from high-end companies that allow you to create custom furniture and have worked with artists doing commissioned artwork, right down to custom fixtures and lampshades. “

She adds that one of the most important elements of a space is good lighting, which can determine the mood of a home.

“Lighting is a bit like a necklace for a dress 一 it plays a key role in a space. You also want to invest in a quality piece of furniture, that’s for sure,” she says.
