The mixed media piece was was created using paint and pen and incorporates collage, stencil and stamping techniques. “As a longtime supporter of the North Charleston Arts Fest, both as a former educator who introduced my students to the event and as a practicing artist who has participated in and won several Fine Jury Awards Art Competition, it is a great honor for my artwork to represent this year’s festival,” Kinard said. “I believe the layers, textures, patterns and colors in my work reflect the vibrancy and the diversity the event brings to our community each year.” Recently retired from a 37-year career as an elementary and middle school teacher, Kinard turned her lifelong passion for the art of a hobby into a full-time business, creating every day from his home studio on Kiawah Island. Curiosity, nature and a love of color inspire his work, which is often abstract, experimental and produced through a process of layering using a variety of s substrates and materials. Kinard really enjoys experimenting with handmade papers, inks, hand-carved stamps and various paint consistencies. Her artwork typically begins with her daily practice of journaling, where she begins to intuitively mark and add layers of color and material to create a journal. Sometimes these ideas become a larger work of art on canvas, paper or wood. Through this process, she finds her work constantly evolving. Kinard has participated in numerous guild and artist jury shows throughout the Lowcountry and has received numerous awards over the years. She is a member of the Charleston Artist Guild, Kiawah Artist Guild, Folly Beach Artist Guild, and the South Carolina Artisans Center, where her work is currently exhibited and available for purchase.
